Description
The Charles Sumner School, named for United States Senator Charles Sumner, was the first public school in Washington, DC established for the education of the city's African-American community. Senator Sumner of Massachusetts was a prominent abolitionist and fought vigorously for the civil rights of African-Americans. The building, known for its distinctive tower, was designed by architect Adolph Cluss and constructed in 1872, a few years after the Civil War. Today the Sumner School serves as the archivist of the District of Columbia Public Schools and holds its records and artifacts. A portion of the building is also a museum and is open free to the public Monday through Friday. In 1979, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It is located at 1201 17th Street, NW, near Dupont Circle.
