I consider this my masterpiece. For years I wanted a definitive painting to express my Catholic beliefs. Indeed, this may well indicate a change in "brands" for me. I tried to express what happens in the Mass.
The story is this. Five years ago, during the Easter service, I saw a couple of kids with their parents. It was obvious by the questions they asked such as "When can we leave?" and the way they fidgeted, that they never attended Mass regularly. And I was thinking as they were distracting me, that if ONLY they knew! These kids probably grew up on Harry Potter and comic book movies. They possibly were already playing fantastic video games. They are used to seeing imaginative wonders all the time.. and yet they were not open to what was happening around them. They didn't realize that before their very eyes, the bread and wine were being turned into the substance of the body and blood of Christ. They didn't realize that in their midst, souls were being let out of Purgatory and into the mystery of Heaven. They didn't realize that all of time and space were convening there right where they stood. Nothing indicated to me that they were aware that at ONE time, we were present with Jesus at the Last Supper where he broke the bread and poured the wine or that we were there with him at Calvary. Nor did they realize that we were celebrating Mass not just with the living people around us but with every other Catholic on the planet in one Universal Church. They couldn't see the angels and the great cloud of witnesses surrounding them.
