Description
Two white crosses mark the graves of brothers Robert F. Kennedy and Edward M. Kennedy (Bobby and Ted, respectively), the younger brothers of President John F. Kennedy, at Arlington National Cemetery adjacent to President Kennedy's grave site. Bobby Kennedy's grave is at the far right. He was assassinated on June 6, 1968, on the night he won the California Democratic primary in his bid for the presidency of the United States. At the time he was a Senator representing the state of New York, and he was the country's Attorney General during his brother's presidency. Ted Kennedy's grave is on the left. He died of a brain tumor on August 25, 2009, and at the time of his death was the fourth-longest-serving senator in United States history, having been in the Senate for 47 years representing the state of Massachusetts since 1962. President Kennedy's grave site is out of view, and is behind the hedge that is in the far background on the right side of the photograph (a man's head is in the hedge -- not literally, of course). President Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas. Also out of view and to the left about fifty feet from Ted Kennedy's grave is a tombstone for their eldest brother Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., who died in combat in World War II. His body was never recovered from the war, but the uniform white "soldier's tombstone" that is standard throughout the national cemetery stands as a memorial to him. So, in a way, all four of the Kennedy brothers are together in Arlington National Cemetery outside Washington, DC, and let us remember that they all died while in service to their country, either by an assassin's bullet, in war, or while serving for nearly fifty years as a Senator. (Photographs of President Kennedy's grave site, and the tombstone of Joseph Kennedy, are also in this gallery.)
