Description
Monet made a first flying visit lasting two days to the Creuse Valley with Gustave Geffroy, the critic who wrote in the paper, La Justice. When he went back, he spent several months in the village of Fresselines, dining every evening at the house of the poet Maurice Rollinat. He admired the location of the river confluence known as Les Eaux Semblantes, and all the stunning, sombre beauty of the two Creuses. He quickly chose his subjects so that he could paint them at different times of day. Here the variations on the same theme are based on the deliberate choice of locations, rather than as an empirical result of unfortunate experiments. These depictions of the Creuse Valley constitute a body of nine works with some variations in size and viewpoint. When he returned to Paris, he showed two of them in a joint exhibition with Rodin; they were praised for the audacity of his vision and palette.
