Description
In the 19th Century, if you wanted furniture, you would go tot he cabinet maker and ask him to make you something. A good cabinetmaker could make things without screws and nails, instead they fit the wood together using dovetails and occasionally glue.
A young boy about the age of 14 or 15 would become an apprentice to a cabinetmaker and work for 6 years learning the trade. At the end of his 6 years apprenticeship, his final exam would be to make a piece of furniture to show off all that he had known and get approval from the Master. These pieces of furniture became known as “Masterpieces.”
Once the apprentice had passed the review of the master who had trained him, he would usually take this Masterpiece with him so that he could show what kind of work that he is capable of performing, much like a portfolio would be used today.
