Ana Julia Fishman put it right. The suffocation of the consciousness is also much to do with our own making. I get that the concept you have portrayed in this piece is trying to show the viewer that he/she contributes to imprisonment of his/her own consciousness, drowning in our own blood as the third eye tries to reach us/rescue us...but we consider third eye matters to be of another world so we don't venture there...in the meantime, extinguishing slowly, our own consciousness.... There is a good discussion piece here.
