Description
St Catherine's Lighthouse which is located on the Niton Undercliff, about 5 miles west of Ventnor, at the most southerly point of the Isle of Wight in England. The lantern is mounted on a white octagonal tower which is 27 metres high and is the third most powerful light operated by Trinity House. The light has a range of 25 miles in clear weather.
The current lighthouse was constructed in 1838, it has 94 steps up to the top and has a smaller fog signal tower attached to it. Additionally, the lighthouse provides a waymark for shipping in the English Channel and is also a guide to vessels approaching the Solent. St Catherine's Lighthouse was automated in 1997 and although a fully working lighthouse, it is open to the public on many days of the year.
