There are many places around the Monterey Peninsula where you can find waves splashing on rocks, but relatively few where you can look straight down on them. This was shot from the rear deck of the Monterey Plaza Hotel in June 2004 during my employment there. This particular deck is a little hard to find, but is open to the public for ocean viewing. You can find it by walking between the rear of the hotel and the Chart House restaurant.
I took a series of photos, and I like this one, with the diagonal slash of foam, the best. I like the way this composition is divided into three distinct zones, the brownish rocks on the left and the cool turquoise water in the upper right, separated by the complete chaos of a white splash frozen in time. I suppose one could find some sort of symbolism in this image, but I'll leave any specific interpretation to the viewer.
