South Fork Pit River Infrared

Description
The Pit River is the longest tributary to the mighty Sacramento. The main stem flows a total of 207 miles with some of the water in the system flowing as much as 265 miles. It is one of only 3 rivers to cross the Cascade Range (along with the Klamath and the Columbia). It gets its name from semi-subterranean lodges and pit traps once dug by the indigenous peoples to trap game coming to the river for water. The south fork runs about 60 miles from near Buck Mountain in the Warner Range near the Nevada state line, through the beautiful Jess Valley, to ultimately join the main stem near Alturas. The main stem then flows generally southwest, through 7 hydro electric dams, the biggest being Pit #3 which holds back Lake Britton near Burney Falls before ultimately entering the Pit Arm of Shasta Lake just below Pit #7.
This deep infrared image was captured on the South Fork between Jess Valley and the community of Likely. In this section it cuts through a rather rugged canyon section that can be quite striking to look at (and used to fish pretty well, although I've not fished it in some years).

In addition to the banner, I am adding this more permanent recognition of its FEATURE on the homepage of A TREE OR TREES IN BLACK AND WHITE. I try mightily to feature only images that would be at home in a juried competition. No doubt that this image fits that bill. CONGRATULATIONS! And consider adding your image to DISCUSSIONS "Please post your featured photograph here" for greater, long-lasting visibility.
