Ships In The Night. Skagway Alaska

Description
In this Alaskan seascape photographed in early fall, two large cruiseships—the Disney Wonder and Holland America’s Oosterdam—rest for the night on satiny blue waters in Skagway. Some snow from the previous week is seen on the silhouetted peaks.
These ships in port perfectly illustrate the idiom “ships in the night.” Originally it was taken directly from a poem by American 19th-century poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. As published in Tales of a Wayside Inn in 1863, Longfellow wrote, “Ships that pass in the night, and speak each other in passing, Only a signal shown and a distant voice in the darkness . . . “
One example: "We met and shared a lovely meal at a restaurant in Charleston, but I forgot to get her number. We were ships passing in the night." Another: "My husband works the night shift and I work days. We're like ships in the night."
During daylight hours these cruise ships shared similar itineraries, but each had its own unique route. What impressed me most was that all three (including ours) shared the same port each evening. It's the coming back together and resting—recharging in one another's presence—that I find so lovely in this tranquil scene.
