Description
Their Satanic Majesties Request was released in September 1967 on Decca Records in the UK and by London Records in the US. It is the sixth British and eighth US studio album by the British rock band the Rolling Stones. The album’s title is a spoof of the “Her Britannic Majesty requests and requires…” text that appears in a British Passport.
The band experimented with psychedelic sounds and instruments, was self produced by the band during a drawn-out recording process, marred by drug use, court appearances and jail terms by members of the band. Satanic Majesties received mixed reviews from critics and band members. The music style and even the album cover were compared to the earlier June 1967 release of Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles. Subsequent albums by the group ditched the psychedelic style and the band returned to their roots in blues/rock music.
The album charted #3 on the UK Albums Chart and #1 on the French SNEP Albums Chart in 1967. I n 1968 it charted #2 on the US Billboard 200 and #1 on the Australian Album Chart. The single “In Another Land” landed at #87 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1967 and “She’s a Rainbow” hit #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1968. Their Satanic Majesties Request certified Gold by the RIAA in the US and Silver on the BPI in the UK.
