Description
The ocean is not a safe place.
It never has been. And even if a pack of governors and kings, presidents and parliaments, issue a flurry of emergency rules and regulations to purportedly make the ocean “safer,” it will not be so.
The ocean is big and grand and majestic, too big to set behind fences and circumscribe by walls.
Its tides, though regular, are not predictable, and they cannot be scheduled and configured by a computer model’s prescriptive algorithm.
Most notably, the ocean does not regulate and adapt its behavior in accordance to human decree. It does not watch TV, scroll through social media, or read newspapers.
The artwork, Rugged Coastline, shows the white surf of the Pacific Ocean breaking on the rocks along the Oregon Coast, USA. This particular stretch of the ocean, the Oregon Coast, is noted for its ruggedness, the cliffs and crags and rocks that result in waves crashing against the shore and constantly changing the shoreline.
And therein lies its beauty. Wise walkers along the beach know that, on certain stretches, it’s up to them to be aware of the changing tides, or they may find themselves quite suddenly scrambling up rocks or thoroughly soaked.
To make the ocean truly “safe,” one would have to completely wall it, tame it, manipulate it, proscribe it, industrially plan its landscaping, control it, and even if this were possible, what is left would not be the ocean, but a very large children’s fishing pond, stripped of all its character, personality, beauty, and integrity.
And even then, it wouldn’t be safe, because the ocean is really really big – really really difficult to keep “in its place.” It is a reminder to us – a glorious and inspiring reminder – that Nature’s beauty lies not in her tameness, but in her freedom.

I love your brushstrokes. Seemingly made with ease, but that comes from experience, right? Another gorgeous creation. f/l/p
