Description
"Royal Residence at Chinon Chateau"
Chateau at Chinon, Chinon, France
Prominent in this image is the restored royal chambers at the chateau at Chinon. Also, featured are the remnants of the great hall just off the royal residence where the then Dauphin and future King Charles VII first met Joan of Arc. It was also at this castle that the king granted the young visionary supplies and commissioned her to join the French army at Orleans where she led the battle to lift the siege of that city by English occupying forces.
Visible in the lower background of this image is a small portion of the city of Chinon as well as the Vienne river which empties into the great river Loire. Most of the standing structure of this castle can be traced back to the 12th century. Many kings of France and some kings of England used this chateau as their residence. Later in the second half of the 16th century it was used as a prison, but fell out of use and was left to ruin. Beginning as early as 1840, it was designated as an historical monument and has recently been restored at a cost of 14.5 million euros.
