Description
The "Richardson Complex" in Buffalo N.Y. refers to a sprawling set of buildings designed about 150 years ago by Henry Hobson Richardson, the great -- and tragically short-lived -- 19th century architect. Richardson designed this magnificent and lovely complex to be a state mental hospital. The hope was that people with mental challenges would be soothed and healed by beautiful parklands (designed by Frederick Law Olmsted), open air, rest, and the most gorgeous architecture the world then had to offer. Luckily the buildings withstood recent neglect and ignorance, and now is the proud home of the beautiful Hotel Henry. I sat on a bench one day and drew this one corner. I loved the grace of the building and also its touches of humor.
