SEPTEMBER SEASON OF MY HEART
The scarlet, autumn maple knows
what it is to lose everything
of color and beauty,
to let go, not in fear or discontent,
not grudgingly, but
give it up with grace.
To remain firmly upright,
exposed and grayed,
stripped bare by wind, alone to face
the sacred silence of a winter solitude,
to sink her roots in soil enriched
by bits of broken things,
twigs of her own being -
and still stand unbowed
in the humbling humus
of her decomposing clothes.
As I wander in the shadows
cast by barren branches, I sense
my own rough bark - so brittle now -
in this September season of my heart.
But let me embrace like her
the solemn sacrament of waiting,
knowing just as she does
that only this moment is timeless -
the past is sown and harvested, the future
unreal with impossible possibilities.
But today is my forever time -
the paradoxical mystery of the now
though the not yet,
or might not ever be.
Let me trust as she does - patiently -
in my own season of dying and letting go,
trust that new growth arises from
deep beneath this dung covered,
fertilizing soil of little deaths,
while taproots seek below the frost
to reach renewing waters of our spring.
