The National Monument was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 25, 1970.[4]

The park's distinctive geologic feature, Spider Rock, is a sandstone spire that rises 750 feet from the canyon floor at the junction of Canyon de Chelly and Monument Canyon. Spider Rock can be seen from South Rim Drive. It has served as the scene of a number of television commercials. According to traditional Navajo beliefs the taller of the two spires is the home of Spider Grandmother.

Canyon de Chelly National Monument has lush vegetation in a Canyon considered to be in the middle of the desert. The river was been dammed outside the reservation, in spite of protests by those living in the Canyon and on the Reservation for miles below the canyon. Little or no water flows on the surface through the canyon, but some water comes over the walls from streams in rainy weather. So the water table stays high enough for the trees and other vegetation to survive.

This area is included in Arizona, in what is commonly called Red Rock Country. It established on April 1, 1931 a unit of the National Park Service. Located in northeastern Arizona within the boundaries of the Navajo Nation. Reflecting one of the longest continuously inhabited landscapes of North America, it preserves ruins of the early indigenous tribes that lived in the area, including the Ancient Pueblo Peoples (also called Anasazi) and Navajo. The monument covers 83,840 acres (131.0 sq mi. It encompasses the floors and rims of the three major canyons: de Chelly, del Muerto, and Monument. These canyons were cut by streams with headwaters in the Chuska mountains just to the east of the monument.

None of the lands are federally owned. The name chelly (or Chelley) is a Spanish borrowing of the Navajo word Tsyiʼ, which means "canyon" (literally "inside the rock"). The Spanish pronunciation of de Chelly was adapted into English, apparently through modelling after a French-like spelling pronunciation, and now English pronunciation.
It is composed much of what is called redstone or red limestone. Is one of the areas of Arizona which is considered excellent for eco-tourism as the Navajos protect the earth, forests, and rivers or streams.

If it's possible for one/two artists to capture the spirit of an entire area, its native beauty, its culture, then I believe that in both painting and photograph, you two have done so. In your capable hands, the Southwest comes alive, the warm colors jump right off the screen or page. I just love everything you do...and I have a particular place in my heart for this canyon...this feels much as it must have when the Navajo first settled here. Just beautiful. F/V T
