Description
"Preening" is part of our series of watercolor paintings on Parrots - Macaws & Cockatoos.
Preening is a maintenance behavior found in birds that involves the use of the beak to position feathers, interlock feather barbules that have become separated, clean plumage, and keep ectoparasites in check. Though primarily an individual function, preening can also be a social activity involving two or more birds.
The hyacinth macaw is a parrot native to central and eastern South America. It is the largest macaw and the largest flying parrot species, Habitat loss and the trapping of wild birds for the pet trade have taken a heavy toll on their population in the wild, so the species is classified as Vulnerable (Wikipedia).
