Description
The Alcazar of Seville is the oldest royal palace still in use in Europe, and was registered in 1987 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, along with the Seville Cathedral and the General Archive of the Indies. This is part of that monumental complex and is called the Patio de la Monteria, featuring the beautiful facade of the Palacio del Rey Don Pedro. You enter the Alcazar through the door of Leon and cross over the Patio del Leon. At the far end is a triple-arched wall after which you emerge here, the Patio de la Monteria. Its name comes from the fact that it was the gathering place of knights and huntsmen, hounds and horses that occurred when the king was preparing to go hunting. The sign regarding the facade, although imperfectly translated to English, nevertheless elegantly states that the facade 'unfolds..as a great altarpiece'. It shows tripartite organization. The central facade, made of stone, is flanked by multifoil blind arches. There is a large frieze, where Arab and Christian elements coexist: schematized decoration inspired by Nature along with the coats of arms of Castile, Leon and the Order of the Band. An inscription in Kufic characters carried out in blue pottery says 'The Empire for Allah', and around these words, another inscription in gothic charcters affirms 'The highest, noblest and most powerful conqueror Don Pedro, by god's grace King of Castile and Leon, has caused these Alcazares and these palaces and these facades to be built, which was done in the year 1402'.

Such a treat for the eyes Joan. The diagonal lines of the courtyard and the outstanding architecture of the building both combine for an architectural wonder. Love it in b/w. Tweeted
