Description
Having a deep appreciation for our 16th President, I did this portrait of him with a log cabin quilt as the backdrop.
A story you may not know is that quilts were used as a means of communication for African Americans escaping slavery. Quilt designs consisting of different patterns & colors were used by slaves to navigate the Underground Railroad. The "secret code" would relay safe houses, meeting places, etc.
One of the safe houses used during that period still stands here in central Illinois, just 3 miles from the farm I grew up on.
Original artwork is soft pastel on a prepared hardboard panel.
