Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is a Texas State Park located roughly 1 1/2 hr from Austin and San Antonio, and 4 1/2 hours from Houston. It is a huge pink granite dome, rising 500 ft. from its surroundings, and it is what in geology is called a "batholith", from the Greek bathos, "depth" and lithos, "rock.". It is, basically, a giant magma bubble that never bursted!
I never get tired of photographing this wonder of nature, located halfway from Fredericksburg in the south and Llano in the north. In this case, we started our hiking at the base of Little Rock, located to the west, and as we were descending into Echo Canyon, which cuts through Enchanted and Little Rock, I spotted this wonderful scene. It is not easy to catch the big rock in its full splendor, so in order for my collectors and viewers to grasp the vastness of the landscape, I shot a panoramic image composed of 6 portrait-oriented photographs. Even though it was not shot during the Golden Hour, the azure tones of the sky are certainly mesmerizing!
