Orange Red Anthurium Leaf

Description
This brilliant orange-red anthurium leaf is a natural phenomenon. While not the normal coloration of anthurium leaves, on occasion new leaves emerge that are red-orange in coloration. The color slowly fades to the normal deep green over time. On a photography outing with a friend who has worked in a wilderness refuge here on the Big Island, I asked him why some new leaves of a normally green plant were red. He told me that it was due to high levels of anthocyanins in the new growth. Anthocyanins are what cause deciduous plants to turn red and orange in the fall at the temperature falls and the trees stop producing chlorophyll. With new leaves that emerge red-colored, as levels of chlorophyll increase over time, the leaves with this coloration when they emerge turn their normal green color.
The translucent nature of the color in this photograph is due to sunlight streaming through the forest to illuminate this single leaf.
