Ask most anyone and they'll tell you that the ocean is not friendly or forgiving. It's powerful and it deserves respect. But when a wave recedes, that moment can look really smooth and peaceful - even if it's just for a brief moment. It's certainly a very peaceful side of the Pacific Ocean - captured in Brookings, Oregon.
How I Got The Shot
I joined Darren White for a trip exploring some of his favorite spots on the Oregon coast and for this location, we were there before sunrise. With a lot of clouds and no sunrise color, we looked to make the most of the waves knack for creating great leading lines. After finding a shutter speed and a couple compositions I liked, I was ready. This let me shoot from a few different vantage points depending on how big the waves were. It might have been nice to pick one but I didn't seem to have the patience for that.
I triggered my shots with a remote to avoid movement although I know some shots had slight movement because of the tripod sinking in the sand as the waves receded.
