Description
"Norwegian Cultural Streetscape, Mathesongården, Trondheim, Sør-Trøndelag County, Norway"
One of the most historic and culturally significant population centers of Scandinavia, Trondheim is the third largest city, and fourth largest metropolitan area in Norway. Founded as a trading post by the name of "Kaupangen" (Old Norse for, "trading/market place") at the mouth of the Nidelva River by King Óláfr Tryggvason in 997, the settlement soon grew to become the first capital of Norway. Trondhejm served as the capital throughout Viking Age, until it was moved to Bergen in 1217, but remained one of Norway's most politically, culturally and economically significant centres throughout the Middle Ages, into modern times. Today, the city is revered as a center of education, research and technology, in addition to its unique qualities of beautiful Nordic culture and history.
