***If you look closely, this little one's tongue is protruding from his little beak. It always amazes me when I am able to capture their tongues flickering in and out.***
The morning was abuzz with unusual hummingbird activity. Two, then three, and finally four hummingbirds were in fierce battle for a chance to sip nectar from the nearby feeders, or even a luxury to take pollen from the stalks of Lavender's soft leaves. On closer observation, the problem with the hummingbirds, was that there were migrating Rufous Hummers who are extremely aggressive as they move through yards.
For several years, now, I have had these migrating birds visit my flowers and feeders, knowing they have a source of food and water in order to sustain themselves on their migration.
Rufous are a large, orange bird an, extremely aggressive and they have great speed. Annas Hummingbirds, who remain year round are smaller and also iridescent green and red with feathers and also aggressive.. When migrating birds arrive, the Annas who have already "claimed" their territory in my yard and are very protective of their food sources.
So this morning, I watched as this Rufous took advantage of their battles and caught several birds in flight, or watching for the rivals to come around. However, one interesting thing was, that this Annas kept its little wings flapping as if he knew he would need to take off quickly.
