Description
Photographic artwork by Cindy Treger. Photographed near Lake Meade, East Berlin, PA. This lovely Monarch, Danaus plexippus, was resting on a gladiolus. The Monarch has a range throughout North America, and migrates to the Sierra Nevada Mountain range in CA and Mexico for the winter. Three generations are born, live and die during the summer, but the 4th generation born in late summer, and early fall makes the 3,000 mile round trip, and lives up to 9 months to make the return trip in the spring to the ancestral breeding grounds before dying. The first three generations live between 6 and 8 weeks. They live on milkweed until they reach maturity, at which point they drink the nectar from other flowers. They are both noxious and toxic; therefore, predators pretty much leave them alone.
