I was told that ‘Mexican Hat’ in Utah was a must-see and since it was on my driving route home, I eagerly anticipated it. It is quite a unique rock formation albeit a bit underwhelming as it sits in solitude by the side of the road. Nevertheless, it is worth it to drive down the dirt road for a closer look. The sombrero-shaped rock outcropping is 60 feet in diameter and is perched precariously on a much smaller base. You just hope it doesn’t pick the moment you are there to come tumbling down. The local area is also called Mexican Hat. It is a ‘Census Designated Place”: not exactly a town, but somewhere that there is a ‘concentration of population’. In 2010, that population was 31. The town is popular as the start (or end) point for rafting trips along the San Juan River, and as a base for exploring some of the other areas such as Muley Point, Goosenecks State Park and Valley of the Gods.
