Description
In this Alfred de Musset piece, Sarah Bernhardt assumes the posture of a reflective Lorenzo the Magnificent (1449-1492), the most influential of the Medicis. In the play, Lorenzaccio fights to free Florence, which had become wealthy under his rule, from the control of an aggressive conqueror. The city coat of arms is threatened by a dragon in Mucha's representation of this tyranny (top left); Lorenzo has put down the book he was reading to consider his next move. This 1863 drama was modified by Bernhardt for her own purposes, and the revised production, shown in this poster, debuted on December 3, 1896. Lorenzaccio became a staple in Bernhardt's repertoire because she was never afraid to play a male role.
