The winner of the Evening Standard art competition was announced last week. Ashton Attzs, a transgender entrant won with their vibrant swimming pool scene called ‘Get out ya lane’. It is a joyful scene with swimmers in a bright blue water canvas. There is a feeling of energy and fun moving up and down the canvas.

My picture was one of 1000 entrants and was probably better suited to last year’s brief of ‘London’ rather than this year’s ‘Progress’ topic.

I resorted to type and did what i know and what comes easiest – i.e. another city skyline. But for the first time in years i decided to paint as well as draw. I had no idea how it would turn out and just kept pushing through until it ‘felt’ right. I ended up discovering pens which contain water colour paint, which are a bit like brightly coloured tippex. Scribbling over the block’s of paint felt very liberating and enjoyable too.

The name of this work is titled “No more brown and grey” and by giving London a brightly coloured facelift, i felt it could liven things up and keep away the blues. I struggle with low mood and energy in the winter months and find the U.K. built environment quite dull. I do love those cities which are brightly painted. In the UK it’s only Bristol which has a number of brightly painted terrace houses, but in most cases buildings are made of brick, stone and glass which create a canvas of grey and browns. Coupled with a grey overcast sky, it can look as though the life has been drained from the world. Recently i travelled to Porto and Bergen and loved the brightly coloured buildings. Everything appeared to be full of life and joy.
