Description
In your light I learn how to love.
In your beauty, how to make poems.
You dance inside my chest,
where no one sees you,
but sometimes I do,
and that sight becomes this art - Rumi
Leucospermum (Pincushion, Pincushion Protea or Leucospermum) is a genus of about 50 species of flowering plants in the family Proteaceae, native to Zimbabwe and South Africa, where they occupy a variety of habitats, including scrub, forest, and mountain slopes.
They are evergreen shrubs (rarely small trees) growing to 0.5-5 m tall. The leaves are spirally arranged, tough and leathery, simple, linear to lanceolate, 2-12 cm long and 0.5-3 cm broad, with a serrated margin or serrated at the leaf apex only. The flowers are produced in dense inflorescences, which have large numbers of prominent styles, which inspires the name.
The genus is closely related in evolution and appearance to the Australian genus Banksia.
A member of one of the oldest families of flowers on earth, protea flowers date back 300 million years and, according to Greek legend, are named after Proteus the son of Poseidon.
Incredibly mystical and slightly mysterious, protea flowers symbolize transformation, diversity and courage.

Sharon Mau replied:
. . it was wonderful how this spot of sunlight illuminated this newly emerging flower head in the shade of the garden leaving the background in shadows . and I love how the glossy sclerophyllous leaves are in such a lovely star shaped design surrounding the pin-cushion protea like a polygon . . it is sweet . . What you are looking at appears to be a single flower, it is a composite bloom , made up of many small flowers and colourful bracts . . The bright orange-red or yellow stalks that emanate from the flower-head, (which are like the pins in the pincushion so to speak), are actually the pistils of individual flowers. Each stalk consists of a yellow-orange column called the style, which supports a bright red or deep yellow pointed stigma which is the female organ of the flower . . this beauty was blooming yesterday upcountry in Kula where they thrive in the cooler daytime temperatures on Maui . . I am delighted you enjoy it Lianne . . . Aloha ;))
