Description
Joe Montana led the 49ers to the first of four world titles they would claim in the 1980s when they defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 26-21 at the Pontiac Silverdome near Detroit. In one of the most competitive Super Bowls of the 1980s, the Bengals rallied from a 20-0 deficit to make it a one score game but turnovers and a goal line stand by the 49ers defense eventually made the difference for San Francisco. Bill Walsh was the brilliant 49ers head coach.
This game remains the highest-rated Super Bowl ever with a 49.1 share (73% of households). Ratings for that game may have been aided by a large blizzard that had affected much of the northeastern United States on game day, leaving residents to stay at home more than usual.
