Description
An interior view looking up towards an arched window in the medieval Bayeux Cathedral in France.
Also known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of Bayeux (or Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Bayeux in its native French language), it is a Roman Catholic church in the town of Bayeux in Normandy, France. The national monument is the seat of the Bishop of Bayeux and Lisieux; many historians agree that it was also the original home of the famous Bayeux Tapestry, which is still housed nearby in a dedicated museum.
The cathedral, built in Norman-Romanesque architectural tradition, was first consecrated in 1077 in the presence of William, Duke of Normandy (also known as William the Conqueror after the Norman conquest of England in 1066).
Following serious damage to the cathedral in the 12th century, the cathedral was rebuilt in Gothic style.
