Description
The sixth Capitol of Illinois, the Statehouse is the tallest non-skyscaper capitol structure in the United States standing at 361 fett (exceeding the height of the U.S. Capitol & eclipsed only by modern, non-classical structures in Florida, Louisiana, and Nebraska. The efforts of a young Springfield lawyer, Abraham Lincoln, and his legal colleagues resulted in the the move of Illinois' state capital from Vandalia to Springfield in 1837. The state's first capital, Kaskaskia, was virtually erased when the Mississippi River shifted course during excessive flooding in 1881.
Construction on the impressive Illinois Capitol building began in 1869, taking 20 years to complete. The zinc covered dome offers a gleaming silver look without adverse effects from weathering. The Capitol, with its impressive dome, is brilliant day and night.
A statue of Abraham Lincoln greets guest on the east side of the Capitol complex.
