Description
This hoverfly landed on the Coreopsis wildflower as I knelt down to get the wildflower in focus. I loved that the hoverfly landed in a split second and looked like it was posing for its photo, looking right into the camera.
Hoverflies are considered a ‘mimic bee’ because of their stripes and nectar seeking. They do not have a stinger and are pollinators of flowers. They are beneficial in that they eat aphids and other plant pests.
Coreopsis are in the Asteraceae family of flowers and are also called Tickseed.
