Description
This is a reproduction of a image by the Hubble Space Telescope of the Horsehead Nebula, first recorded in 1888 by William Fleming of Harvard College. It is about 1500 light years from Earth. The reddish glow originates from a cloud of hydrogen gas ionized by the nearby star Sigma Orionis. The darkness of the nebula is caused by dust and the bright spots within it are young stars in the process of formation. Therefore the Horsehead Nebula is a stellar nursery.
