Horseshoe Bend is a point on the Colorado River in which it makes a wide sweep around a sandstone escarpment. Typical to any river, it sought the path of least resistance to the sea, but around 5 million years ago, the Colorado Plateau had a tectonic shift that uplifted area. Over time, the meandering rivers condensed into one river as they were became trapped in the changed landscape into what is now known as the Colorado River. Over time, the river cut through the uplifted layers of sandstone into the shape that we see it today. Horseshoe Bend is approximately 1,000 ft deep with an arch of 270ยบ.
