Description
On the floor before the altar of Saint Matthew's Cathedral in Washington, DC is the following statement: "Here rested the remains of President Kennedy at the Requiem Mass, November 25, 1963 before their removal to Arlington where they lie in expectation of a heavenly resurrection."
John F. Kennedy was the 35th President of the United States and was assassinated on November 22, 1963 in Dallas, Texas by Lee Harvey Oswald. The President was shot as he sat atop the back seat of a convertible with his wife, Jackie Kennedy. They are buried side-by-side with other family members in Arlington National Cemetery.
Saint Matthew's Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington. The church was originally established in 1840 near the United States Capitol, and construction began on its present location not far from the White House in 1893 with the first Mass celebrated on June 2, 1895. In 1939 the church was designated as a Cathedral when the Archdiocese of Washington was established.
