Description
Hamlet and His Mother (1849) by French artist Eugène Delacroix
Delacroix's painting recreates the moment in Shakespeare’s tragedy "Hamlet" where the title character notices a figure (Polonius) hiding behind the curtains, while Hamlet is having a private conversation with his mother, Queen Gertrude of Denmark. This results in Hamlet stabbing Polonius with his sword, and uttering "How now! A rat? Dead for a ducat, dead!"
