Description
Grjótagjá is a small lava cave near lake Myvatn in Iceland. Inside there is a beautiful geothermal thermal spring. It is part of the most popular sightseeing route of north Iceland, the Diamond Circle, and on the Ring Road that encircles the country.
Until the 1970s Grjótagjá was a popular bathing site. But during the eruptions from 1975 to 1984 the temperature of the water rose to more than 50 °C (122 °F), though the temperature is slowly decreasing and has fallen below 50 °C again. During our visit there another tourist told us that it is dangerous nowadays to bathe here because of the bacteria. I don’t know if this is true, but I wouldn’t try it nevertheless.
The cave has an ethereal, otherworldly feeling that deserves to pay it a visit. The clear water has a wonderful turquoise color as you can see in the photo and when we were there the sun illuminated the beautiful rocky walls.
Game of Thrones Spoiler alert! If you haven't seen episode 5 of season 3 do not read further! Grjotagja became famous through the Game of Thrones TV series. In the fifth episode of season three called “Kissed by Fire” protagonist Jon Snow and the wildling woman Ygritte consummate their relationship here. In fact most of this scene was filmed in the studio and a waterfall was added with CGI. So, many tourists visit this location to see where Jon Snow and Ygritte had sex!

Beautiful photograph. Love the blue color, the rocks, and the light. Also, the information you provide is so interesting - and I think we're about to watch that episode soon! (No worries about spoilers - I'm glad to hear it, in this case!)
