A meadow of Glacier Lillies (Erythronium grandiflorum), Glacier National Park, Montana. The tiny white/purplish flowers are Western Spring Beauty (Claytonia lanceolate). Thanks to Amanda Wilson of Glacier NP for identifying the white/purple flowers.
The Glacier Lilly is also known as yellow avalanche lily and dogtooth fawn lily. It is native to western North America and is found in subalpine mountain meadows, slopes, and clearings. It grows from a deep bulb 3 to 5 centimeters wide. Its two green leaves are wavy-edged and up to 20 centimeters long. The stalk may reach 30 centimeters tall and bears one to three showy flowers. Each flower has bright lemon yellow petals, white stamens with large white to yellow to red anthers, and a white style. The flower is pollinated by bees. The bulbs are a preferred food of the grizzly bear, while Mule deer eat the foliage.
Western Spring Beauty is a small wildflower that is found in early spring in the western North America, especially at higher elevations. It has five petals and five stamens, and is approximately 1 cm across.
