Description
Photographic artwork by Cindy Treger. Photographed at the Gettysburg Battlefield in Gettysburg, PA. Lt. Gen. James Longstreet commanded the Army of Virginia's 1st Corps. Longstreet did not get a statue until 1998 because of the accusations that the battle was lost for the Confederacy on July 2nd because of his sluggishness, and that on July 3rd he resisted Lee's plans to attack the Union center. Lt. Gen. James Longstreet, arguing with Lee about the futility of attacking Cemetery Ridge on July 3 - "I have been in pretty much all kinds of skirmishes, from those of two or three soldiers up to those of an army corps, and I think I can safely say there never was a body of fifteen thousand men who could make that attack successfully."
