Description
The thrill of catching the wind and the waves is the double attraction for wind surfers. Windsurfing, also known as sailboarding or boardsailing, is a surface water sport that combines elements of surfing and sailing. It consists of a board usually 2 to 3 metres long, powered by wind on a sail. The rig is connected to the board by a free-rotating universal joint and consists of a mast, 2-sided boom and sail. Windsurfers can perform jumps, inverted loops, spinning maneuvers, and other "freestyle" moves that cannot be matched by any sailboat. Windsurfers were the first to ride the world's largest waves, such as Jaws on the island of Maui, and, with very few exceptions, it was not until the advent of tow-in surfing that waves of that size became accessible to surfers on more traditional surfboards. Extreme waves aside, many expert windsurfers will ride the same waves as wavesurfers do (wind permitting) and are themselves usually very accomplished without a rig on a conventional surfboard.
Sailboarding has been one of the Olympic sailing events at the Summer Olympics since 1984 for men and 1992 for women. Olympic Windsurfing uses 'One Design' boards, with all sailors using the same daggerboards, fins and sails. The equipment is chosen to allow racing in a wide range of sailing conditions. This is important for the Olympic Games, as events have to take place regardless of whether there is enough wind for planing. There are several types of competition including formula windsurfing, raceboard class using a daggerboard, slalom using small narrow boards, speedsurfing, freestyle, super X and wave sailing. The watercolor painting shown hear is of a windsurfer performing freestyle tricks. He is judged on his repertoire of moves, creativity and degree of difficulty of the stunts.
