As I understand it, the theory of infinite complexity is mostly acknowledgment of all the ever-changing layers of known and unknown physical existence, and our shifting emotional and intellectual responses to them. Freedom tends to mean different things to different people in different communities and countries but mostly centers around the right and ability to exercise personal choice. Combine the notion of infinite complexity with that of freedom and we get some interesting ideas to play around with in some creative ways.

“Freedom and the Theory of Infinite Complexity” is an art piece which departs from my usual works of Silk-Featherbrush Artstyle, photography, mixed media, or fine art digital paintings because I needed to suggest something of the unknowable. At the same time, I wanted to anchor the work with a mixture of mostly easily recognizable hot and cool colors: aquamarine, blue, red, streaks of yellow, purple, and bursts of white, gold, and brown. They swirl and flow in different directions all around a single glowing form. In terms of style and technique, this canvas comes closest to what I once described as emergent expressionism and transformative impressionism when writing about another artist’s work.

The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 has prompted a lot of conversations about where individual personal freedoms begin and end, particularly when it comes to wearing facemasks in public or traveling during the holidays. This is not surprising since COVID-19 is not only still spreading and killing, but mutating. A lot of people feel they have the right to take their chances without being limited by considerations for others while many of those “others” tend to disagree. Likewise, rebellions against social injustices in 2020 have not only initiated dialogues about what it means to be free in America but also in places like Hong Kong, France, and Nigeria.

Some of what we call life seems simple enough depending on individual struggles and how we approach them. Some of it is more complex and requires taking time to understand each other, ourselves, and world around us a little better.
