Fort Jefferson is a six-sided prison of the Civil War era located in the Dry Tortugas in the Gulf of Maxico. It is about 70 miles from Key West, Florida. The fort was named after Thomas Jefferson. Dr. Samuel Mudd was imprisoned here for helping John Wilkes Booth after Booth shot Abraham Lincoln.
