Who’s afraid of the big bad red football wolf mascot? The other team is fearful of this tough predator who knows how to get into the red zone and score touchdowns! Wolves (canine lupus) are the largest species in the canine family. They are social animals, travelling in packs and thereby know the value of teamwork. Many school and universities have adopted the wolf as their mascot.
Several universities such as University of New Mexico (UNM) and Sol Ross State (SRSU) utilize the lobos, the Spanish term for wolves, as their mascot. Other college mascots are named the Wolfpack, like North Carolina State (NC State), Oak Hills (OHCC) and Loyola New Orleans. There are several other variations too, including the Colorado State Pueblo Thunderwolves. Other schools that have “just” the wolf as their mascot include Northern State (NSU), Western Oregon (WOU), West Georgia (UWG), Newberry and Cardinal Stritch.
