Description
I visited the White Sands National Monument on a bright, blazingly hot, sunny afternoon in May. White Sands National Monument is a portion of a 275 square mile gypsum sand dune desert in New Mexico. It has been described as one of the world's great natural wonders and one of the most unusual and magical places in the Southwest. It is by far the most unusual place I’ve had the opportunity to photograph. There are edge dunes that support some plant life (grass, yucca and saltbush) that manage to survive and stabilize the dunes and in the interior, there are windswept dunes of pure gypsum sand that are constantly sculpted and rearranged by the winds. I expected that by afternoon the landscape would be filled with footprints from the daily visitors, and although there were some, in many places they are erased within minutes by the blowing sands. The few hours I had that day is not long enough to even begin to capture the beauty of the area. I will go back one day to spend more time there.
