Description
A viertical format scene of the Central Park Pond with brightly colored peak autumn foliage reflected in the water. The famous Gapstow Bridge seems almost obscured by the colors and density of the trees and shrubs. The cloud- streaked blue skies are reflected in the pond to create a lovely symmetry of color and shape. Gapstow Bridge spans the widest part of The Pond at Central Park, located at the southen end of the park just steps from Fifth Avenue. Gapstow Bridge was first built in 1874, designed by Jacob Wrey Mould. At that time it was made of wood with cast iron railings. It was replaced by the current stone bridge in 1896, by Howard & Caudwell. Gapstow Bridge stands 12 feet high and spans 44 feet of water with its full length being 76 feet.
