Sitting on the ground, with my elbows on my knees, looking a coyote straight in the eye from 12 feet away, as it captured and consumed a gopher, was probably a once in a lifetime opportunity for me. Every now and then, everything just falls in place and you get an incredible, up close and personal, view into the real lives of wildlife. Moments like these are rare and they usually only last for a few seconds, but they remain in your memory forever. In this instance, my experience lasted over a minute, until the meal was finished and the coyote trotted off, continuing to methodically crisscross the field, in search of another gopher.
