Description
The Excelsior Geyser Crater in Yellowstone National park discharges 4000-5000 gallons of 199 degree F water per minute. This works out to 6 million gallons a day, equivalent to the volume of nine Olympic swimming pools. All that steaming water runs down this chute into the Firehole River. The red-orange-rust colors are due to the presence of thermophiles, heat-loving bacteria and algae. You can get a sense of scale from seeing how tiny the people look on the boardwalk on the upper right.
