Description
A young woman stands, wrapped in a towel, and looks out into a vista. She stands easily, gracefully, confidently, safe in the knowledge that where she is, she is not exposed. In this safe place, this place of privacy and freedom, she is able to relax as she thinks, dreams, daydreams, wonders, questions.
Because her thoughts, our thoughts, the inner thoughts of each and every human being – these are precious indeed. Like other elements of life that are of inestimable value – genuine relationships with other people, true health, spirituality, dignity – you can’t touch, handle, or attractively package these, no matter how slick the advertising or propaganda. But that’s not to say that people aren’t trying.
There are some people – marketers, advertisers, corporate executives, financiers, politicians– who would sell their souls if they had one to know what is in people’s thoughts. Deep down, what do people fear, want, hope for, desire, wonder about, contemplate, doubt? Are they lonely? Insecure? Covetous? Envious? Or on the other end of the spectrum, grateful, content, satisfied, happy? What do they THINK?
This knowledge, which is harvested through all sorts of tricks, from seemingly harmless social media quizzes (after all, who doesn’t like to talk about themselves?) to the active and aggressive garnering and gathering of personal information such as people’s online searching and shopping habits, is power indeed. The more you know about a person, the more easily you can control them, and not just their shopping choices.
The artwork, Elegance, celebrates the beauty and value of our thoughts. It doesn’t seem like that, does it? But consider our thoughts: they are secret, intimate, private; those that are deepest and most meaningful we share with few others, if any. We would as freely expose those thoughts to strangers as we would parade down Main Street nude.
In other words, our naked thoughts aren’t on display for just anybody. They are ours, to celebrate, explore, grow through, and share only how and with whom we wish.
