Hikes along the coastlines in New Zealand are often dependent on the tides. What is possible at low tide isn’t always possible at high time. So you have to study the tide charts and schedule accordingly! On the outbound hike from Lee Bay to Port William hut on Steward Island, we arrived at Maori Beach as the tide was going out so we still had a few streams to cross.
